Phi Theta Kappa - Honor Society

Chapter Officers

Being a Phi Theta Kappa chapter officer provides unique opportunities for leadership including working with people of all ages and backgrounds, learning to speak in front of a group and developing organizational skills.

Phi Theta Kappa advisors often give their time, money, and much more to ensure that their students can take advantage of the opportunities associated with Phi Theta Kappa membership. Most do this with nothing more in return than the joy of witnessing their students grow as a result of their affiliation with the Society.

Considering all that your advisors do for you, try some of these tips to help chapter officers lighten the load for advisors.

Take the lead. Nix new member recruiting stress for advisors by coordinating the mailing of invitation letters, placing phone calls to prospective members, planning the orientation agenda, collecting membership applications and planning the induction ceremony. The Good as Gold Chapter Resources DVD which includes a membership recruitment video, a PowerPoint/slide presentation for use during new member orientation and highlights of society programs is an excellent resource for new member orientations.

All advisors should have a copy of this DVD. Additional copies of the DVD and Good as Gold Recruitment Posters may be purchased online at http://recognitions.ptk.org. The recruitment video and a downloadable version of the recruitment PowerPoint with script are available here.

Cooperation counts. Focus on working together for the benefit of the chapter rather than becoming detoured by personal differences. Advisors prefer advising to refereeing any day.

Give a hug. A little word of thanks or a big Phi Theta Kappa hug can go a long way to make an advisor's day. Tell advisors how much you appreciate their dedication!

Plan for programs. Since Phi Theta Kappa's programs are member-driven, advisors give input on programs, but members are responsible for the successful implementation of the programs. As officers you can lead the troops in orchestrating programs with pizzazz.

Build lines of communication. Keep advisors in the communication loop with progress reports on ongoing programs and plans for upcoming events as well as any challenges on the horizon for the chapter. Also take the opportunity to ask your advisors how you can assist them.

Recognize award-worthy advisors. Nominate advisors for Phi Theta Kappa's awards recognizing outstanding advisors as part of the Hallmark Awards Program on the regional and international levels and show them what a winner you think they are!
