Recipients of the 2001 Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Awards

Dr. Donald L. Alexander
Allegany College of Maryland
Cumberland, Maryland

"Dr. Alexander has demonstrated his support for Phi Theta Kappa through his financial commitment to the Omicron Pi Chapter through yearly contributions in the college budget to provide seen money for chapter activities. In 1996, Dr. Alexander provided major financial and logistical support for the Western Maryland and Western Pennsylvania Leadership Conference. Without his leadership and support, the Leadership Conference would not have reached fruition."

In these 30 years of service to the college, President Boggs has been a devoted advocate of the students, encouraging their participation in all types of activities. Dr. Ruth Burgos-Sasscer
Houston Community College System
Houston, Texas

"Last year, Dr. Ruth Burgos-Sasscer was named one of the United States' Most Influential Educators of the Twentieth Century. For those of us who had the privilege to work with Dr. Burgos during her distinguished career, it was a fitting tribute. Part of the reason she was named an influential educator was Dr. Burgos' unflagging commitment to community college students, including Phi Theta Kappa members. In perhaps her most significant contribution, she generously invited a member of Phi Theta Kappa to represent HCCC's 55,000 students on her Chancellor's Council."

Dr. John A. Cordova
South Mountain Community College
Phoenix, Arizona

"Dr. Cordova has gone beyond the call of duty in his encouragement of Phi Theta Kappa participation on a regional and international level. He has paid, out of his budget, for Alpha Eta Delta members who serve as regional officers to attend the International Convention. He has provided reassigned time for chapter advisors because of his belief in the importance of the leadership that these advisors provide for students. This support of Phi Theta Kappa has allowed the region to flourish and become internationally recognized."

Dr. Ralph R. Doty
Lakeland Community College
Kirtland, Ohio

"At the college level, Dr. Doty provides the chapter with a line item budget amount enabling the chapter to participate in a wide variety of service and scholarly activities, as well as attend all regional and international events since its inception. In addition, he has permitted members to wear the stole and tassel at graduation, and recognizes them both verbally and in writing on the program. He also attends and asks his board members to attend many chapter functions, beyond inductions."

Dr. Harry Krenek
Western Texas College
Snyder, Texas

"Dr. Krenek also volunteered his time and encouragement to our chapter. Each year Psi Zeta has a college-wide Honor Study Topic Day in which he allows classes to dismiss. For the last two years he has been on the Millennium Day and Water Day planning committees. He helped find speakers for this huge event and also has been the introductory speaker both years. He provided lunch for each of our speakers during our daylong event."

Dr. Norman K. Myers
Ozarks Technical Community College
Springfield, Missouri

"Dr. Myers has supported the Alpha Psi Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa for the past several years. Through his efforts to attend and speak at our events, Dr. Myers has brought much attention to the chapter. He has spoken at many of our events, and is always interested in what we are doing and willing to participate himself."

Dean Kriss Philips
Des Moines Area Community College - Boone Campus
Boone, Iowa

"As a leader, Dean Philips supported Phi Theta Kappa and its mission by regularly attending functions and assemblies. Dean Philips provided campus leadership by encouraging our chapter to continue and persevere even when there were 'tough' semesters. He provided direction and support from an administrative position. Certainly Tau Phi would be extinct without the aid and encouragement that he provided. Tau Phi could depend on his leadership in the continuous support of Phi Theta Kappa."

Vice President Homer B. Smith
Ivy Tech State College
Sellersburg, Indiana

"Homer has made it possible for Phi Theta Kappa members to travel to various events within the state at no cost to the chapter. Because of his support, travel expenses were paid by the college's budget so advisors could attend regional and international conferences and other related events. He allowed our chapter use of the college vans to transport members all over the state."

Dr. A. Zachary Yamba
Essex County College
Newark, New Jersey

"President Yamba seems to be as excited about our regional and international events as we are. His pride in Essex County College's Phi Theta Kappa members is clearly evident in the way he shows unconditional support for our chapter's participation in these events. Whenever we return from regional or international conferences, he likes hearing how much we enjoyed ourselves and he always asks what awards did we bring back for him. Alpha Theta Theta members travel to our regional and international events knowing we have the blessings and support of our dear president. We are as proud of him as he is of us."
