Let Phi Theta Kappa Recommend You!

You have found that dream job but you have come across one problem – your potential employer has requested a letter of recommendation. Knowing who to use a reference and how to ask for a recommendation are just a couple of the hurdles people face when getting that new job.

If you are stumped on where to begin with requesting a letter of recommendation, why not start with Phi Theta Kappa? As one of the many benefits of membership, the Society currently offers members the opportunity to request a personalized letter of recommendation to be sent directly to the potential employer or college.

Details of Phi Theta Kappa’s mission and history are included in the letter. The member’s high academic achievement and individual growth through Phi Theta Kappa’s service program opportunities are also listed.

Every day members are requesting Phi Theta Kappa recommendations for possible jobs or college programs.

Ajia Ligon, a member at the University of Cincinnati recently used a Phi Theta Kappa letter of recommendation for a potential employer.

“I chose to use this benefit because I am looking to make a career change and a letter of recommendation from Phi Theta Kappa will go a long way in strengthening my resume,” said Ligon.

Elizabeth Riley is a member at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas used the letter to continue her education.

“I am applying to nursing school and I chose a Phi Theta Kappa letter of recommendation because of its honorary status,” said Riley. “I hope the committee who will review my nursing application will see that I am a dedicated student, who strives to learn and makes good grades.”

In some cases an employer or institution may request up to three letters of recommendation. If you are faced with this situation follow these guidelines towards picking the right reference:

Be prepared – Make a list of references whom you believe would provide a good reference on your past work experience. This can include previous employers, college professors or business acquaintances.

Ask the right way – Rather than ask someone “Can you provide a reference?” instead ask if they are knowledgeable enough with your past work experience to write a letter. You want to make sure the reference feels comfortable writing a recommendation.

Use good references – Know your reference and make sure the individual is enthusiastic about your past employment and would provide a positive response.

If the reference is provided by a past employer, make sure the reference is responsive and will be able to confirm your title, your reason for leaving and that you were employed with that organization. It is also suggested that you request a letter of recommendation from a manager when you leave a position.

Don’t forget to Get Connected to Phi Theta Kappa for your letter of recommendation. Simply log in with your member ID and select the letter of recommendation option. Enter all application information and your letter will be on its way!
