More Grads Choose Double Majors
The trend is especially evident this graduation season as students seek an edge in a tightening job market by earning extra credentials.
Opinions vary as to whether or not the decision to double major is worth the time, effort and expense. Some say it’s a reflection of an increasingly complex world that requires more cross-discipline learning to solve problems, while others see it as a tactic of “résumé-building” that lacks focus and practical application.
Most double majors require students to devote a half to two-thirds of their courses to the two subjects. Some schools have rigid requirements that make it more difficult to major in two areas, but others allow some classes to count in both majors. Also, many colleges advocate academic minors – a less burdensome undertaking that involves fewer courses than a second major.
As with any choice involving your career, start out with a sensible, realistic plan. Double majors often involve two courses of study that are related, but you can round out your academics by selecting two majors that hone complementary skills, such as a foreign language and economics, performing arts and business, or journalism and political science.
