Four major Phi Theta Kappa programs have deadlines falling very early in December.  Please encourage your college administrators to nominate students for the All-USA/All-State Academic Team, and encourage members to apply for Guistwhite Scholarships and to submit Nota Bene entries. Consider nominating a supportive administrator for a Hallmark Award. Deadlines for these programs include:

Be Part of a Collective Demonstration of “Democratization of Information”

To illustrate the “power” aspect of Phi Theta Kappa’s new Honors Study Topic focusing on The Democratization of Information, members, chapters, regions and alumni are invited to participate in a practical application to be featured at the 2010 Convention in Orlando. Following the format popularized by “Playing for Change,” a collaborative performance of the song “What a Wonderful World” will be created. Students Invited to Apply for NASA Opportunity by December 15

Community college students from across the nation who are interested in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are invited to apply for the new National Community College Aerospace Scholar Program, sponsored by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).  Advisors, please encourage your students to find out more and apply online by the December 15 deadline. Center For Excellence Announces Holiday Schedule

The Center for Excellence, Phi Theta Kappa’s Headquarters, will be closed November 26-27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Messages left for Headquarters staff by email or telephone will be returned when the Center reopens on Monday, November 30. Find a directory of Center for Excellence staff members here.

Major Scholarship Deadlines Fall on December 1

December 1 is the deadline for nominations for the All-USA/All-State Community College Academic Team. Please encourage your college to participate and nominate  students for these awards, which share a common nomination form. Members nominated for the All-USA/All-State teams may also be considered for Guistwhite Scholarships. Any member meeting eligibility requirements may apply directly for Guistwhite Scholarships, which also have a December 1 deadline.

New Chapter Chartered in Wisconsin

Nota Bene Submissions Due December 4

Members of Phi Theta Kappa currently enrolled in community colleges may submit literary works to be considered for Nota Bene, the Society’s literary honors anthology. Poetry, short stories, personal essays and research papers may be submitted. Entries for the 2010 edition are due December 4, 2009. The entry judged best overall receives the $1,000 Citation Scholarship; four runners-up receive Reynolds Scholarships of $500 each. Entry requirements and a submission form are available on the Nota Bene website.

Reminder: Administrator Hallmark Award Entries Due December 1

Hallmark Award entries in administrator categories are due by 5:00 pm Central Time December 1. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes outstanding administrative support through four Hallmark Awards: the Shirley B. Gordon Awards of Distinction for college presidents/CEOs; the Distinguished Administrator Awards for non-CEOs; the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Awards for retiring administrators; and the Distinguished State Community College Director Awards. Information and entry forms are available online.
