Members, advisors and alumni will hear presentations by experts on various aspects of the Honors Study Topic, learn about Honors in Action, and enjoy time to discuss and reflect upon what they have learned in a small group setting.
Registration for the 2011 Honors Institute is $875.
Since 1968, the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute has engaged members in intensive investigation of the Society’s Honors Study Topic, an academic theme selected for its timeliness, global significance and interdisciplinary applications. Created to celebrate Phi Theta Kappa’s 50th anniversary, the Honors Institute format is based on a program used at Oxford University.
Attendance is generally limited to400 to create an engaged scholarly community of faculty and students from across the nation and around the world. In daily plenary sessions, internationally and regionally recognized scholars address the Honors Study Topic from selected interdisciplinary perspectives. Following each presentation, participants meet in small group seminar discussions led by Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholars, chosen for their knowledge of the Topic and their experience as communicators and facilitators.
During the week, the seminars become subcommunities, where group members are encouraged to apply critical thinking to concepts introduced by the speakers, and explore new ideas through productive discussions and exchanges of viewpoints. Participants may air their views before the entire Institute community during the Town Hall Meeting, which uses videos of current events and breaking news to promote open discussion. Participants may also read for roles in a Reader’s Theatre production based on Honors Study Topic-related literature.
A significant aspect of the Honors Institute has always been the setting, chosen in part for its applicability to the Topic. To fully explore the attractions of the area, one day of the week is designated for “R & R,” with no activities planned.
Highlights of the Honors Institute Include:
Speaker Presentations

Seminar Meetings
Each speaker’s presentation will be followed by a Seminar Meeting, which is an intimate small-group discussion led by an experienced facilitator, or Faculty Scholar.
Chapter Advisor Luncheon
Chapter advisors are invited to a special luncheon and are encouraged to attend in order to network with other advisors and learn more about Phi Theta Kappa programs.
Honors Institute Reader’s Theatre
Are you a performer who is interested in learning about the Honors Study Topic? If so, consider signing up to participate in the Honors Institute Reader’s Theatre during the final General Session. Directed by Steve Schroeder, chapter advisor at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL, and Communications/Technology Representative to the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Program Committee, the Reader’s Theatre will feature a collage of literature that addresses various aspects of the Honors Study Topic. Audience members will see how the production of a reader’s theatre performance will create an engaging environment that effectively fosters scholarly discussion of Honors Study Topic issues. Attendees may sign up to participate during Honors Institute Registration or following the first General Session. All participants must attend rehearsals.
Network with Scholars
The Honors Institute draws participants from across the nation and abroad and offers several opportunities to get acquainted with your fellow Phi Theta Kappa members.
