Honors in Action: U.S. Pledges to Halve Emissions

For the first time ever, the United States has joined the world's major industrialized countries in a commitment to halve greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. However, debate continues on the actions of the "Group of Eight," which have drawn criticism from developing countries expected to follow the lead of the industrialized nations. Environmentalists also have called the G-8 statements weak or ambiguous. An Honors in Action project involving research, leadership and service activities on the G-8 summit is an opportunity to implement the Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Honors in Action projects provide opportunities for learning and growth through integrating the Honors Study Topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences; the International Service Program, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities; and the Leadership Development Program resources.
