Honors in Action: Polar Bears Endangered
The U.S. Interior Department's announcement that the polar bear (See Issue #10, Honors Program Guide) will be protected as a threatened species, amid a decline in Arctic sea ice due to global warming, has triggered considerable debate between conservation groups and conservative factions. Proponents of the measure cite the threat to the polar bears' habitat; opponents say the polar bear is being used as a political ploy to heighten climate hysteria and prevent oil drilling in the Arctic. An Honors in Action project involving research, leadership and service activities on the polar bear issue is an opportunity to implement the Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. Honors in Action projects provide opportunities for learning and growth through integrating the Honors Study Topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences; the International Service Program, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities; and the Leadership Development Program resources.
