Why does Phi Theta Kappa have a leadership development curriculum? Leadership is a frequently discussed concept. Around the world, thoughtful people perceive a crisis of leadership as the well-established institutions and processes for dealing with an ever-growing number of social, economic, environmental, and political problems seem less and less capable of developing solutions or creating progress. We wonder where effective leaders are to prevent or respond to each new calamity or issue whether global, national, local, or personal — nuclear proliferation, wars, genocide, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, community disputes, corporate scandals, education, pollution, human rights – the list goes on and on and there is no shortage in sight of opportunities for effective leaders to make a difference. To help respond to this challenge, and because recognizing and assisting human potential is central to the mission of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, we have designed a leadership development program to build and equip leaders at the grassroots level.
Our vision is for an engaged and vibrant citizenry of life-long learners who can affect change and enhance the quality of life and advance the common good in communities everywhere.
We will accomplish this vision with a Program based upon the following Guiding Principles:
- Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Programs is a dynamic leadership development program identified by an approach grounded in the humanities.
- Personal reflection and development of a personal philosophy of leadership are essential to tap the passion for engagement that exists within everyone.
- Variety in methodologies and highly interactive methodologies are essential to the Program’s success.
- Effective links between academic, intellectual endeavor and skills development through such experiences as service-learning or taking on leadership roles are vital to promote life-long learning.
- Quality Assurance is key: a certification process for those who facilitate the Program shall be required; information and evidence gathering is necessary to ensure effective evolution and strategies to move toward the vision of the Program.
- Continued service to the Program’s facilitators after certification is important to quality assurance, the vitality of the Program, and the energy and continued professional development of the Program’s facilitators.
Between 1992 and 1996, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation supported Phi Theta Kappa’s Leadership Development Program at 100 colleges across the country. In 1999, upon reviewing leadership development programs in Higher Education, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation named Phi Theta Kappa’s Leadership Development Program one of only eight Exemplary Programs based upon effectiveness, philosophy, sustainability, comprehensiveness, and targeted training, development, and support for those facilitating the program.
Since 1992, over 2,000 educators from over 600 institutions around the world have participated in our Certification Seminars. If you seek to expand your constituents’ horizons with meaningful personal development and marketable skills, join us for a 2008 Certification Seminar and discover the curriculum that reveals and maximizes potential for all. The curriculum is accessible to audiences from all walks of life because its core readings come from the humanities, spanning history and the globe to create an inclusive body of works that together demonstrate universal leadership principles and skills.
