Leadership Briefs

Leadership Briefs debuted in the Golden Key News Briefs in September 2002, and are published twice each month. The Leadership Briefs are short articles designed to summarize recent publications on leadership issues, to offer tips and ideas for dealing with leadership challenges, or to encourage thought and reflection on developing qualities and skills to be an effective leader. Ten of the eleven topics of the Leadership Briefs correspond to the Units in Phi Theta Kappa’s Leadership Development Program, and we have added a “Leading Time” topic to address leadership issues about balancing and organizing time.

Phi Theta Kappa’s Leadership Development Program is humanities-based and interdisciplinary so these Leadership Briefs draw on diverse sources, including literature, philosophy, history, film, psychology, business, and current events. Questions or Comments about Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Briefs may be directed to Monika Byrd, Dean of Leadership Development for the Honors Program Department.

Honors in Action Profiles
The following articles describe the work of real people who exemplify the Honors in Action approach in their lives, integrating scholarly research and learning with service and leadership and educating others as well as seeking others to work with them. Their lives illustrate the philosophy expressed by Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 that "Scholarship is of worth chiefly when it is productive, when the scholar not merely receives or acquires, but gives".
