Risley, Exley, Among Alumni Speakers at Completion Summit
Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley and Snead State Community College (Alabama) President Dr. Robert Exley share a lot in common. Both were members of Mu Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at San Jacinto College's Central Campus, both were Phi Theta Kappa National Presidents, and both returned to their community college alma mater recently to urge current students to complete their degrees or credentials.
The "SJC Summit on Community Colleges" was organized by the South Campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Gamma Zeta. Outstanding college alumni were invited to share how their experiences at San Jacinto College shaped their successful futures.
Phi Theta Kappa members at San Jacinto College and across the nation are making a difference for thousands of their fellow students, Dr. Risley said, through their support of community college completion and by such events as the San Jacinto College Summit.
Dr. Exley shared guidelines for success that he learned as a San Jacinto student: Have a destination, live with integrity; know your purpose; be courageous and live with a sense of continuous dissatisfaction, and challenge yourself daily with regard to accepting, affirming, and acknowledging others.
Also speaking were SJC alumni El Franco Lee, a county commission, and county Tax Assessor Cheryl Johnson. A current student who performs professionally as Baby Jay debuted two new songs supporting completion, "Respect" and "Don't Drop Out."
