Last-Minute Honors Institute Reminders

The 2014 Honors Institute is just days away! But before we meet you in St. Louis, here are some important last-minute reminders.
The GO BEST Express Airport Shuttle will take you to Washington University, but you must make a reservation online to receive a discounted rate of $15 one way or $29 round trip per person. Visit the shuttle service website to reserve a seat.
Use the following address in your GPS if you’re driving to Washington University: 6618 Shepley Drive, St. Louis, Missouri. If you’re coming via taxi or shuttle, request the Clock Tower area on the Washington University Campus.
Check-in begins at 1 p.m. in Ursa’s Fireside, located between Lien House and Gregg House on Shepley Drive. This is also the location of the Clock Tower, which is a campus landmark.
If you are arriving between 9:30 p.m. and midnight, check in at the Conference Service Office at 6618 Shepley Drive, Suite 1950.
Participants arriving after midnight should go to the campus police department on Shepley Drive and indicate that they are attending the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Institute and need to check in. Campus police staff will contact Honors Institute staff to let late arrivals into the residence halls.
Dinner will be available in the Washington University cafeteria beginning at 5 p.m. The First General Sessions starts at 6:30 p.m.
Past Honors Institute attendees will notice a change in this year’s meal cards. You will each receive a pre-paid card for use in the food court in Dains Dining Hall that will cover dinner Monday, three meals on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and breakfast on Saturday.
Each meal contains a set amount of money for meals, which may be used at your discretion. However, once the money on your card has been exhausted, you will be responsible for paying for your remaining meals. Unused money will not be refunded.
To help manage your money, we suggest allotting the following amounts for each meal:
All dorms are air-conditioned, furnished and equipped with ample lighting. Each dorm room contains one extra long twin bed, one chair, one dresser and a small bookcase/nightstand. Each bathroom has a vanity, shower stall and toilet. Each dorm building is equipped with a laundry room, and a common area containing a kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave and sink are located on each floor.
A linen package containing two bed sheets, one pillow, one pillowcase, one blanket, two bath towels, two washcloths and soaps per participant will be provided. A linen exchange will be held Wednesday, June 18, from 7 to 11 a.m. in Ursa’s Gameside (next door to Ursa’s Fireside).
You will be charged for missing linens: $18 per blanket; $10 per bed sheet; $3 per pillowcase; $5 per pillow; $5 per bath towel and $3 per washcloth.
Here are some items you may want to bring:
- alarm clock
- reading light
- extra linens
- an extra pillow
- shower shoes
- shower caddy
- radio/iPod/iPad (with chargers)
- coffee pot, cups, coffee and condiments
- plastic hangers
- travel iron
- hair dryer
- ear plugs
- umbrella/rain jacket
- comfortable walking shoes
The attire for all Honors Institute events is casual. The average high temperature for St. Louis in June is 85 degrees, and the average low is 64 degrees, so you’ll want to dress accordingly. However, all buildings are air-conditioned and can get chilly, so be sure to bring a light jacket or cardigan.
Complimentary high-speed wireless Internet access is available in each guest apartment. If you wish to connect to the Internet through a wired port, you must register your devices using a group password that will be available at check in.
The campus fitness center is located in the South 40 House and is open Monday through Friday in the late afternoon/early evening and on Saturday and Sunday mid-morning. You can purchase a membership for the length of your stay for $30 or a daily pass for $10 by cash at the front desk of the fitness center.
St. Louis Tour Day
On Wednesday, June 18, attendees will head to Historic St. Louis to visit the Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse and to take a riverboat ride on the Mississippi River. Be sure you bring some comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the warm temperatures. You may also want to bring a rain jacket or small umbrella in case of rain, and don’t forget your sunscreen!
Thursday, June 19, is R&R Day. No activities are events are scheduled, so we encourage you to get out and explore St. Louis. You are responsible for all fees including meals, transportation and admissions on R&R Day.
As an option for the evening of your R&R day, group tickets have been arranged for Billy Elliot at the MUNY, America’s oldest and one of the largest and most respected outdoor musical theatre festivals.
A perfect story to accentuate our Honors Study Topic, Billy Elliot explores one boy’s struggle to expand his frontiers of human expression beyond his rural English upbringing through bravery, blurring boarders — and ballet! This production marks the MUNY and regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical, based on the classic film with a score by Elton John. Learn more about the show.
Participants will be able to take a backstage tour at 6:30 p.m. and then enjoy the 8:15 p.m. performance. Tickets are $32 each (a savings of $10). Arrangements for transportation to and from the MUNY as well as dinner are on your own (suggestions will be provided).
To reserve your tickets, email BillyElliotPTK@gmail.com and indicate how many tickets you would like to purchase. You will then receive an invoice and pay for your tickets via PayPal. All sales are final, and there are no refunds. Tickets will be available for pick-up at registration at the Honors Institute.
Tickets are limited and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. If there is availability, tickets will be sold at Honors Institute registration, but it is highly recommended that you request and purchase your tickets in advance.
