Acheivement of Excellence Award

Phi Theta Kappa staff display the Achievement of Excellence Award.

"Helping students develop to reach their full potential has been a part of Phi Theta Kappa's mission since its founding almost 100 years ago," said Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. "In many ways our Society pioneered student development in the community college arena, and we continue in this role through our programs encouraging scholarship and research, leadership development, service learning and civic engagement. We also, through CollegeFish.org and the Community College Completion Corps, are able to provide opportunities for all college students. We congratulate our staff for their dedication to student development, and we are very grateful to the National Council on Student Development for this recognition."

Phi Theta Kappa programs promoting student development that were cited by NCSD in the recognition were:

  • The Honors Program and its components, the Honors Study Topic, a two-year in-depth examination of an issues-driven subject of relevance to the human experience in a global context; and Honors in Action, in which chapters conduct research on an issue related to the Topic and use their leadership skills to develop and implement a project that effects positive change through service
  • Leadership Development Studies, a compilation of resources, including the Leadership Development Studies course, to enhance key leadership skills
  • Five Star Chapter Development Plan, a guide to strengthen chapters, promote program implementation and recognize accomplishments
  • Five Star Competitive Edge, a web-based platform to develop such vital skills as communication, professional ettiquette and critical thinking
  • Hallmark Awards, recognition for outstanding achievements in Honors in Action and service to Phi Theta Kappa
  • CollegeFish.org, an award-winning transfer planning and college completion platform
  • Community College Completion Corps, developed by Phi Theta Kappa as the student arm of the national college completion agenda

Dean of Leadership Development and Service Learning Monika Byrd accepted the award. Also attending from Phi Theta Kappa were Susan Edwards, Dean of Honors Programs and Academic Affairs and a member of the NCSD Board of Directors; Jeff Edwards, Dean and Director of Regional and Chapter Development; Luke Davis, Phylliss Duvall, Garon Tate, Associate Directors of Regional and Chapter Development; Jennifer Blalock, Chief Student Support Officer; and Joshua Hancock, CollegeFish.org Training and Development Specialist.
