Nineteen College Presidents Receive Shirley B. Gordon Awards of Distinction

Jackson, MS - Nineteen college presidents received 2006 Shirley B. Gordon Awards of Distinction at Phi Theta Kappa's International Convention in Seattle.

This Award of Distinction is named after Dr. Shirley B. Gordon who serves as chairman of the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors. She is the President Emeritus of Highline Community College in Washington.

The Gordon award recipients have demonstrated continued support for their colleges? Phi Theta Kappa chapters by providing a variety of resources including faculty advisor release time, a line-item budget for the chapter, financial support for chapters to participate in regional and international events and scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa members.

These presidents have also provided academic support to their students by coordinating All-State Academic Team Programs and supplying nominations to scholarship programs such as Jack Kent Cooke and Coca-Cola Scholarships.

Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and largest honor society serving two-year and community colleges in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, U.S. territorial possessions, the British Virgin Islands and the Republic of Palau. Approximately 100,000 students are inducted annually in the Society's 1,200 chapters.
