Coca-Cola Scholarships to Members Total $187,000

A total of 187 Phi Theta Kappa members have been selected to receive Coca-Cola Two-Year College Scholarships of $1,000 each, in recognition of their academic excellence and volunteer contributions.

Among the Phi Theta Kappa member winners was Aja Patterson, a computer science major at Harold Washington College in Illinois.

"Growing up I used to wonder how would I know how to become successful in life because I didn't grow up around success. I first started college as a full-time student during August of 2005, I was afraid I would not be able to perform well in college due to the many barriers I had to overcome such as a full-time job, first-generation student, and multiple financial hardships," Patterson said.

She volunteers at a local charity, Deborah's Place, the National Food Depository, and for the National Runaway Switchboard as a Liner. "Liners" assist callers with identified needs such as filing an abuse report, finding shelter or making arrangements to return home.

"Through these volunteer activities I realize that everyone has hardships and working through them shows a strength of character," Patterson said. "Not only will this scholarship alleviate some of my financial worries, but it also gave me a confidence boost. During the times I question my capability of finishing my degree I can now look back at this show of support and know that I can achieve anything."

"I considered myself a long shot but am delighted and honored to win one of the scholarships. I plan to apply the scholarship toward my tuition expenses this fall at Schenectady County Community College," said member JeriAnn Ottaviano. Ottaviano volunteers at her inner city church, preparing and serving meals to those in need.

"I have been part of that meal service since it began, nearly 10 years ago. I have helped prepare and serve food, and have acted as a hostess, greeting our neighbors as they come in, and chatting with them as they wait in line. There is a tremendous blessing in serving others, and I enjoy this ministry very much."

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,200 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the British Virgin Islands and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.
