Five Colleges Receive Phi Theta Kappa Teacher Preparation Award
JACKSON, MS - Teacher preparation programs at five community colleges
have been chosen to receive national awards from Phi Theta Kappa International
Honor Society.
They include Cerritos Community College, Norwalk,
California; Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Chandler, Arizona;
Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Green River Community
College, Auburn, Washington; and Richland College, Dallas, Texas.
The
2007 Phi Theta Kappa Teacher Preparation Program Awards recognize the
colleges' exemplary efforts to prepare students for careers in education.
Representatives of the colleges will receive their awards March 2 during
the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs
(NACCTEP) Conference in New Orleans.
"Phi Theta Kappa is proud
to honor these outstanding institutions, their faculty and administration
for outstanding work in teacher preparation," said Society Executive
Director Rod Risley.
"Education can solve the social and economic
ills facing the entire global community," he continued. "A strong and effective
education system relies on well-prepared and committed teachers. We salute
these colleges and all community colleges that are developing a new generation
of educators."
College administrators, faculty and students
will attend the Conference to accept their awards.The college representatives
will be invited to showcase their program during the NACCTEP Conference.
Their teacher preparation programs will also be highlighted in a special
publication distributed by Phi Theta Kappa to all community college presidents
within the United States.
Phi Theta Kappa, with headquarters
in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher
education, with 1,200 chapters on two-year and community college campuses
in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the
Marshall Islands Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab
Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions.
