Alabama Chapter Named Phi Theta Kappa's 2008 Most Distinguished
JACKSON, MISS. - The Beta Lambda Delta Chapter at Jefferson State Community
College-Shelby Campus in Birmingham, Alabama, was named Phi Theta Kappa's
Most Distinguished Chapter for 2008 at the conclusion of the recent International
Convention in Philadelphia.
The chapter earned Scholarship,
Leadership and Service Hallmark Awards and was named a Distinguished Chapter.
Among the comprehensive programs undertaken by the chapter during the
past year were creating a "bio-station," or living lab on their campus,
conducting a leadership symposium series for local high school students
and participating in an oral history project in conjunction with the Birmingham
Civil Rights Institute.
The Most Distinguished Chapter was
announced at the conclusion of the Hallmark Awards Gala.
First
Finalist was the Kappa Alpha Chapter from Holmes Community College in Goodman,
Mississippi.
Second Finalist was the Eta Nu Chapter at St. Petersburg
College in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Third Finalist was the
Beta Theta Kappa Chapter from Butte College in Oroville, California.
Fourth
Finalist was the Pi Omega Chapter at Danville Area Community College in
Danville, Illinois.
Fifth Finalist went to the Alpha Zeta Iota
Chapter at Northwest Shoals Community College in Phil Campbell, Alabama.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered
in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher
education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses
in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the
Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia,
the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial
possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its
founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.
