Member Makes Education History in Washington State
Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Alpha Epsilon Rho Chapter member Robert Rowe has made history! A student at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington, Rowe is the first community college student ever to be named to the college's Board of Trustees.
Rowe's appointment by Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire marks a victory for Bellevue students, who have worked for five years to be represented on their college's board. Legislation allowing students at Washington's state community and technical colleges to serve on boards of trustees - a privilege enjoyed by students at Washington state universities for years - was signed into law this year.
"We congratulate Robert on his appointment, and we also congratulate the students at Bellevue and everyone who supported their efforts for representation," said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. "This appointment is highly significant as it acknowledges the important role of community colleges in Washington state's higher educational arena. We look forward to seeing other colleges follow Bellevue's lead."
