Phi Theta Kappa alumnus H. Ross Perot joined thousands of high school and college students, faculty, administrators and community leaders at his alma mater, Texarkana College in Texas, recently at a rally supporting the college and college completion. Perot, recipient of Phi Theta Kappa's Most Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1977, signed the Commit to Complete banner provided by his chapter, Zeta Sigma.

Alumnus H. Ross Perot pledges support to completion.

Perot, a billionaire entreprenuer, announced a gift of $1 million for the college and issued a challenge to the community to match future funds. "Texarkana College provided me with opportunity," said Perot, who attended in 1947-49. "It gave me the opportunity to continue my education and to develop my leadership skills as president of the Student Council. A capable faculty challenged me in the classroom. Small enrollment made personalized instruction a reality. I was prepared for the academic challenges of the U.S. Naval Academy because of my association with Texarkana College."

Speakers during the rally included Zeta Sigma Chapter President Sean Hurlbert and advisor Mary Ellen Young, one of three generations of her family who has attended Texarkana College. Young explained the mission of the Community College Completion Corps and the Commit to Complete Campaign, and joined other family members in telling of the important role Texarkana College has played in their success.

Following Perot's lead, high school and college students and supporters signed the Commit to Complete banner. All students pledging to complete received certificates. As part of their College Project, the Zeta Sigma Chapter members are traveling to local high schools, middle schools, elementary schools and adult education centers to present a Student Success Seminar Series. Members will share information about study skills, test taking, time management and the importance of completion. All students signing the pledge during the seminars will also receive certificates and stickers.
