Lanza Scholarships Increase; All Application Processes Streamlined
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
Two very important changes to Phi Theta Kappa's scholarship opportunities have been announced: In 2012, $50,000 in Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships will be awarded, doubling the amount available; and all Society-administered scholarships will now use a common application with two application periods within the academic year, one in the fall and one in the spring.
Complete information is available here.
"Phi Theta Kappa is committed to developing and enhancing scholarship opportunities for our members and all community college students, to help them reach their educational goals and complete their degrees," said Society Executive Director Dr. Rod Risley. "These changes are part of our continuing commitment to making our scholarship opportunities more visible and accessible to all students who qualify. This move toward a common application, and the consolidation of deadlines into two per academic year, will streamline the application process for students and the college nominators."
"Developing scholarships and raising awareness of scholarship opportunities are key to Phi Theta Kappa's strategy of college completion and student success," Dr. Risley said. "In addition to directly administering scholarships for associate and baccalaureate students, Phi Theta Kappa has created programs that help students gain research, critical thinking and leadership skills, promote civic engagement, and guide them through the transfer and credential completion process."
Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships, for community college students majoring in health care fields, will increase to $2,500 each in 2012. A total of 20 Lanza Scholarships will be awarded.
Effective immediately, all scholarships administered by Phi Theta Kappa will use a common application. Students may apply simultaneously for multiple scholarships, using the common application to provide basic information and demographics, and answering questions specific to scholarships for which they are eligible. The common application will be available at my.ptk.org.
The fall application period opens October 1 and closes December 1, and covers scholarships for transfer students. Fall scholarships include the All-USA Community College Academic Team, the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team, Guistwhite Scholarships and Hites Transfer Scholarships. New Century Scholars are selected on the basis of their All-USA Community College Academic Team rankings in their respective states. Nominees in participating states will be named to the All-State Community College Academic Teams.
The spring application period opens February 1 and closes April 1. Scholarships covered by the spring applications focus on community college completion. These include Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships, Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarships, GEICO Business Student Scholarships and Dowell Leadership Scholarship.
Students must be nominated by their college for the All-USA Community College Academic Team. Nominees may then be considered for the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team.
Phi Theta Kappa membership is required to apply for Guistwhite Scholarships, Hites Transfer Scholarships, Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships, Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarships, GEICO Business Student Scholarships and Dowell Leadership Scholarship. Lanza Scholarships are open to eligible community college students.
