Leadership Lesson: Resolve to Focus on Motivation

January brings a new year and a new opportunity to focus on chapter success. The key to jumpstarting your chapter for the new year is motivating your chapter members to get involved. Here are a few simple resolutions you can make in 2008 to focus your efforts on motivating members:

I resolve to communicate better.
It all starts with focusing on the basics - who, what, where and when. Identify how your chapter members get their news and information both on campus and off. Then find ways to communicate information about upcoming events and activities that will really reach your members. Remember, communication is a two-way street. Identify and publicize ways for your members, both active and soon-to-be-active, to reach chapter leaders with their ideas for activities and desire to participate.

I resolve to empower others.
Empowering is far more than delegating. Rather than simply assigning tasks, encourage chapter members to be proactive and use their creativity to achieve your chapter goals. Provide vision and purpose, but allow others to take ownership. Afford others the opportunity to lead, and ultimately, to grow as well.

I resolve to have a good time.
People are attracted to activities and pursuits that they enjoy. Even hard work becomes enjoyable if it's mixed with fun and fellowship. Inject elements of fun and fellowship in everything your chapter does. Make your chapter known on campus as the group of people who always have smiles on their faces and resolve in their hearts.
