Alabama Chapter Collects Books for Africa
The Beta Pi Nu Chapter
at Lurleen B Wallace Community College in Alabama recently
rallied fellow students and other student organizations to participate
in the spring 2007 Books for Africa book drive. Beta Pi Nu members placed
posters around campus, handed out fliers and placed book receptacles in
the Student Center and near the Bookstore on campus. Ten cases of books were
collected and nearly 163 students were informed about Phi Theta Kappa and
the need for used textbooks, which are donated, to Books for Africa. Good
work, Beta Pi Nu!
Texas Chapter Gets on Board with Project
Graduation
The Beta Zeta Chapter at Paris Junior College
- Sulphur Springs in Texas organized a campus wide canned food
drive for Project Graduation. Over 300 pounds of canned food products were
donated by students and faculty. The nonperishable food items will be donated
to the Hopkins County Community Chest food pantry. Chapter members promoted
the food drive by placing signs throughout classrooms and bulletin boards
two weeks prior to the start of the drive. The Sulphur Springs News Telegram
announced the food drive in an article submitted by the chapter. Chapter
members also used the Project Graduation Planning Packet on the Phi Theta
Kappa website containing a step-by-step implementation process and best
practices, customizable Project Graduation posters, and Project Graduation
table tents. Way to go, Beta Zeta!
Texas Chapter Recognizes
Outstanding Students
The Alpha Mu Chi Chapter at Northeast
Texas Community College in Texas hosted an event to celebrate
the achievement of college sophomores completing 31 or more hours with
a successful GPA. Each summer chapter members meet with the college president
to identify needs and goals for the approaching semester. Retention was
identified as a goal. Members mailed invitation letters to students who
met the criteria. During the event, students heard from the College President
and chapter members presented the benefits of membership in Phi Theta Kappa.
Attendees were entered into a drawing for a $500 scholarship and door prizes,
served lunch and given a t-shirt that read "Sophomores Will Succeed." Because
the event was sponsored by the chapter, $5 was charged to help with the cost
of stationery, postage and t-shirt design. Members solicited sponsorship
from a local bank, college faculty and the college bookstore. Volunteers
signed in guests and conducted the door prize drawing. Approximately 280
students were reached, 40 students attended, and over $1500 was raised.
The college has adopted the event and will co-sponsor the event in the coming
school year. Outstanding, Alpha Mu Chi!
