Community Colleges Recognized For Outstanding Leadership Programs

Two community colleges have received national recognition for their use of Phi Theta Kappa's Leadership Development Studies Program in the past year.

Phi Theta Kappa Certified Leadership Facilitator Bob Saldarini, a chapter advisor at Bergen Community College in New Jersey, recently presented the Patterns of Leadership course at the 2005 Community College Futures Assembly National Policy Summit on Re-creating America's Community Colleges. The course was named a Bellwether Awards Program Finalist in Instructional Programs & Services, recognizing it as one of 2005's Top 10 Community College Educational Experiences. Bergen attributes the success of their leadership development efforts to effective links in the course between instruction and student life.

Pima Community College in Arizona incorporated the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies Program in their Student Medallion Leadership Institute. The National Council for Student Development cited the Institute for a Best Practice award in March 2004. Pima Community College also forged a partnership and articulation agreement with the University of Arizona and their Blue Chip Leadership Program, a highly competitive and selective initiative for which there was no access for community college student leaders previously. The University of Arizona has been impressed with the outstanding success of Pima's Medallion students who have transferred into the Blue Chip Leadership Program and efforts are underway to replicate Pima's leadership development model throughout the state.

Faculty interested in teaching the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies Program on their campus may learn more at http://leadership.ptk.org. The final Faculty Certification Seminar of 2005 is scheduled for October 20-23, at the Dolce Heritage in Southbury, Connecticut.
