Make Your Chapter Shine
With These Bright Ideas for Good as Gold Week!

Monday, November 14:
Pinnacle Gold Day
Focus: Benefits of Society Membership

Implementation Ideas
  • Hold a second chance phone-a-thon for eligible students who have not accepted the membership invitation. Report students accepting membership to Headquarters, and invite them to participate in the chapter's next formal induction ceremony.
  • Set up a Phi Theta Kappa information booth, where students can pick up membership materials and ask questions about the Society. If possible, play the Good as Gold Recruitment Video. Display Good as Gold posters, the Honors Stole and Tassel, a membership certificate, and the Golden Key Pin.
  • Bring Phi Theta Kappa into the classroom. Arrange for members to briefly present membership information in different classes throughout the day. Ask college faculty to encourage eligible students in their classes to consider accepting the membership invitation.

Tuesday, November 15:
Scholarship Day
Focus: Scholarships/Honors Study Topic

Implementation Ideas
  • Coordinate a Scholarship Fair on your campus, and invite nearby senior institutions offering Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarships to participate.
  • Invite all freshmen to a presentation about the Leaders of Promise scholarship, for which eligible students who accept membership may apply in the spring, to assist with costs of the second year at community college. Offer door prizes, including a textbook scholarship for next semester.
  • Host a viewing of the final Satellite Seminar on campus. Ask faculty in the Social Science, Humanities, American Studies or History departments to give students extra credit for attendance. Arrange for a moderator to lead discussion after the seminar.

Wednesday, November 16:
Civic Engagement Day
Focus: Impacting the Community

Implementation Ideas
  • Promote the importance of civic responsibility by visiting the state capitol with other interested campus organizations. Find out who your representatives are and try to arrange to meet them.
  • Partner with your Student Government Association to hold a voter registration drive on campus. Ask representatives on both sides of a current local issue, such as a bond issue or city election, to visit the campus to speak and answer questions.
  • Volunteer to meet a need in your community. Contact local relief agencies, such as community kitchens, rescue missions or homeless shelters, to find the greatest need.

Thursday, November 17:
Service Day
Focus: Great American Smokeout ®

Implementation Ideas
  • Sponsor a Cold Turkey event, where students can swap their cigarettes for turkey sandwiches. Variations on this idea include swapping cigarettes for candy, gum, straws or stress balls. Ask your administration to make the campus smoke-free for the day.
  • Invite an American Cancer Society representative to campus for a speech on cancer prevention and early detection. Distribute literature from the local American Cancer Society office.
  • Volunteer to lead a Kick Butt Day. Clean up cigarette butts on campus grounds and place signs encouraging smokers to discard cigarettes in appropriate receptacles.

Friday, November 18:
Founders Day (Observed)
Focus: Faculty/Administration Appreciation

Implementation Ideas
  • Collaborate with other campus organizations to host an Appreciation Luncheon. Surprise a faculty member or administrator who has shown exceptional support of the chapter by inducting them as an honorary member.
  • Host a continental breakfast or afternoon tea for faculty and administrators. Have a presentation on the Honors Study Topic, Phi Theta Kappa history, or the chapter's community involvement.
  • Have a birthday party! Set up a table on campus and distribute free cake or popcorn to students. Learn about Phi Theta Kappa history and see other ways to celebrate the Society's birthday at www.ptk.org/society/foundersday.htm.
