Alumna featured on the cover of People

After shedding half of her body weight, Cristy Pauley McAdams made the cover of the January 12 issue of People magazine. A Phi Theta Kappa member inducted in 1992 at Trident Technical College in South Carolina, she credits her success to Weight Watchers and exercise.

McAdams has lost a total of 162 pounds, and says her weight loss is the result of many small lifestyle changes, not a diet. "The most dramatic changes I made at first were the foods I ate and the quantity," she said. "I watched portion size and made sure to have enough of each food group." It was not until she lost 50 pounds that she started to exercise. "I went from 20-minute sessions three days a week to working out six days a week, varying in intensity and using weights."

All in all, McAdams' life has changed for the better. "I can say that I am living my life again and do not waste the time I now have by worrying about how I look, how much I weigh and what others think of me," she says. "I feel very satisfied with where I am right now, and I intend to enjoy every minute of it.

"I never expected the fame, but I always expected to help others by sharing my story," she said. "I'm enjoying myself, and that's what really matters. I know that I am helping others because of the phone calls and emails I have received. I've had a lot of well wishes and congratulations, as well as plenty of people who have told me they were heading back to the gym this week."

Let McAdams' story serve as an inspiration to you to continue your dedication to healthy living even as the 2002-04 study of health issues concludes.
