Phi Theta Kappa Voices
Phi Theta Kappa constituents give personal voices to hot topics.
Bruce Haupt, Jr.
President, Brevard Community College, Melbourne, Florida
Officer Orientation
"The most important thing to me is developing new officers and members and
leaving them with the framework to succeed even after my board is gone."
Neill Kovrig
Nevada/California Regional President, Palomar College, San Marcos, California
Membership Recruitment
"Strike up a good rapport with your college counselors, because they are an
invaluable resource when it comes to prospective members. Despite the
relatively small pool of potential Phi Theta Kappans, you can usually
increase the interest in the organization by having even one or two
counselors as cheerleaders."
Rainier Masters
Past Greater Northwest Regional Vice President, Prince William Sound
Community College, Valdez, Alaska
International Honors Institute
"The most valuable experience at the International Honors Institute was
hearing the perspectives of my peers concerning the Honors Study Topic.
Their personal stories and life experiences added to the educational
content of the guest speakers. Getting to know the people who would be
working toward the same Phi Theta Kappa goals created an even closer
sense of family."
Robyn Waters
President, Northampton Community College, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Project Vote Smart
"It is not our purpose to influence people's choices in an election;
but to make them aware of the importance of making an educated choice
and to help them realize the influence that choice has on the direction
of our country."
Sandi Garcia
Nevada/California Regional Southeast Vice President,
San Diego City College,San Diego, California
Encouraging Participation
"Something that has worked wonders at my campus is ADVERTISE, ADVERTISE,
ADVERTISE! We started a weekly email blast, so that members know every
week what's coming up. We also hold Scholarship Workshops and Leadership
Workshops throughout the semester. We seem to pick up one or two new
members after each of these events. Little steps, but last September,
we had four members at each meeting, last Wednesday, we had 17."
