Secrets for Success

If you are looking for ways to implement the Honors Study Topic in your chapter or in your region, then look no further. We have just what you need!

Your college or chapter is encouraged to subscribe to the 2005 Honors Satellite Seminar Series, which will feature five presentations by renowned speakers in the field of popular culture.

Why The Satellite Seminars?

Students or advisors who are not familiar with the Satellite Seminar Series and do not fully understand the benefits may need a little coaxing before buying into the idea. Here are a few selling points that show why the Satellite Seminars are a worthy investment:
  • The Satellite Seminars will help your chapter implement the Honors Study Topic and the Scholarship Hallmark.
  • The Satellite Seminars can help your chapter reach your Five Star Chapter Development Program goal.
  • Your college can use the Series to promote awareness of the college in your community.
  • Your college Honors Program may use the Series as a supplement to the Honors curriculum.
  • Faculty members at your college can use the DVDs to supplement their course curriculum.
  • The college library can keep the DVDs in their general collection for use by students and faculty.
  • And finally, the topic of popular culture will appeal to a diverse audience. With topics like sex in popular culture, fashion, stereotypes, advertising, and religion, who wouldn't want to participate?

Find Funding

Depending on which option you choose, a subscription to the Satellite Seminar Series costs $350-$400 (or $425-$475 if you miss the July 15 deadline). This is truly a deal! To bring the five Satellite Seminar speakers to your campus individually, you would pay thousands of dollars. Nevertheless, many chapters face limited budgets and cannot afford the subscription fee. If this is your chapter, don't give up. Here are some suggestions for finding funding:
  • Meet with the Dean of Instruction or Dean of Academic Affairs to explain the academic benefits of hosting the Satellite Seminar Series on your campus.
  • Present information about the Series to the Director of your college Honors Program.
  • Consult with faculty in the history, American studies, social science, sociology, anthropology, arts, and communications departments.
  • Share information about this educational opportunity with your college library. The library may wish to purchase DVDs to add to their general collection.
  • Contact the Student Government Association or Student Assembly. Funds may be available for campus-wide events, concerts, or speaker series.
  • Speak with the Dean of Admissions or other admissions officer, and propose a "High School Honor Society Day" on campus. Invite area high school honor students to visit your campus, attend a reception in their honor, and then participate in the Honors Satellite Seminar Series. Show them that your college has the academic edge they are looking for!

Subscription Options

Once you are convinced that the Satellite Seminar Series is a good idea, and you have secured funding, you have several subscription options.

Option 1: Purchase the coordinates to view the live broadcast. This is a good option for those who want to interact with the speakers by asking questions and who have access to satellite technology.
Option 2: Purchase DVDs of the broadcasts. This is a good option for those who do not have satellite technology or who need scheduling flexibility.
Option 3: Purchase both the coordinates for the live broadcast and the DVDs. This option combines the opportunity to interact live with the speakers, with the ability to repeat the Seminars at your convenience.

For information about speakers and other details, check out the Satellite Seminar brochure included in this edition of the Golden Key Newsletter or visit the website at www.ptk.org/honorsseminars/.

How can the Satellite Seminars help my chapter in the Five Star Chapter Development Program?

» First, the Satellite Seminars can act as an Honors Study Topic activity to fulfill the requirements of the Two, Three, Four and Five Star levels.

» Second, the Seminars can serve as your College Project to fulfill the requirements of the Three Star level. Many college presidents are interested in recruiting outstanding high school graduates to the community college. Chapters can work with the college administration to initiate a recruitment event, in which they invite high school students to the college to participate in the Satellite Seminars.

» Finally, if your chapter is unable to attend the International Convention or Honors Institute, the chapter may participate in all five of the Satellite Seminars in order to fulfill the requirements of the Five Star level.
