Pre-Convention Events Provide Leader Development Opportunities
Chapter advisors and chapter and regional officers are encouraged to come to Dallas early and take advantage of the pre-Convention events providing specialized instruction for Society leaders. The Advisor Education Pre-Conference,the Chapter Officer Academy and the Regional Officer Academy are scheduled for 8:30 am - 5:00 pm on Wednesday, April 13. Advisors and chapter officers may register by marking the appropriate area of the Convention registration form. Regional officers are registered by their regional coordinators. There is no charge for the Advisor Education Pre-Conference; officers pay an additional $65 to attend the Officer Academies. "The guidance was outstanding and I learned a lot about Phi Theta Kappa and the running of a local chapter," said Lynda Wright, past chapter president at Delaware Technical and Community College. Al-Muccadin A. Gravesande, New Jersey State President for the Middle States Region, agreed. "My experience at the Regional Officer Academy was electrifying. The information provided has had a profound impact in my academics and day-to-day interaction," said Gravesande, who attends Essex County College.
"I cannot recall the last time that I learned so much in an eight-hour time block," said advisor Mary Ann Spisak at Corning Community College in New York about last year's Advisor Education Pre-Conference. "Because of my new-found knowledge and brainstorming with veteran advisors, my chapter will attain Five Star status this year and my job has become easier."
2005 Features More Rounds of Educational Forums
Members and advisors attending the 2005 International Convention will have more opportunities to attend Educational Forums than ever before! Five rounds of Educational Forums will be offered, affording participants unequalled access to instruction in Society programs, leadership development, planning for transfer and personal growth.
The 2005 Convention Forums begin on Thursday, April 14, when two rounds will be held at 1:00 pm and 2:45 pm. Two more rounds of Forums are planned for Friday, April 15, at 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Forums conclude with a final round on Saturday, April 16, at 8:30 am. "Educational Forums equipped me to be a better leader," said Deborah Blonsky, chapter president at Monroe Community College in New York. "Our chapter had problems engaging our members in activities," said Blonsky, who sought help at a 2004 International Convention Forum on leading an effective membership meeting. As a result, "This year we are planning our membership meetings more carefully and are acting more professionally in our presentation of the materials," she said. Blonsky added that a Forum on the Honors Study Topic also invigorated her chapter's honors programs.
