USA TODAY Case Study Challenge: A New(s-Oriented) Approach to the Honors Study Topic

Attention chapters and members: Are you searching for a way to implement the Honors Study Topic that also encourages creativity, critical thinking and knowledge of current events? If so, take the USA TODAY Case Study Challenge for 2004!

USA TODAY is again sponsoring the Case Study Challenge, based on the second year’s focus of the Society’s Honors Study Topic, Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze.

A new feature of this year’s competition allows the entire entry to be submitted electronically - clips of articles are no longer required.

The Case Study Challenge is a continuation of the collaboration between Phi Theta Kappa and the nation’s newspaper USA TODAY, which also provides cash stipends for All-USA Academic First Team members - an investment of more than $650,000 since the program began.

Through the Case Study Challenge, USA TODAY and Phi Theta Kappa hope to encourage scholarship, critical thinking and problem solving and motivate students to keep abreast of current events through relevant, timely and real-world information.

Awards of $500 each will be presented to the authors of the top four Case Study Challenge entries. Winners will be recognized at Phi Theta Kappa’s 2004 International Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and entries will be posted on the USA TODAY collegiate website. Case Study Challenge entries may be submitted by chapters or by individual members.

Entries should be based on articles appearing in the print editions of USA TODAY between July 1, 2003, and February 1, 2004, which relate to one specific aspect of Directions of Health: Choices in the Maze. Articles must be written by a USA TODAY staff member - articles from news agencies and wire services cannot be used.

Entry Preparation Guidelines:

  • Submit a list of the four or five articles selected for the Case Study, including headlines, bylines, USA TODAY publication dates, USA TODAY section (News, Money, Sports or Life) and page numbers.

  • Prepare a one-page (500 word maximum) Case Study Summary - a description of the topic and why it was chosen.

  • Develop a brief essay (200 word maximum) describing future implications of the Case Study topic.

  • Include between three and five discussion questions.

  • Include six suggestions for additional resources.

  • Submit entries in Word or WordPerfect formats.

  • Entries must be received by 5:00 pm CST February 6, 2004, and should be sent via email to case-study-challenge@ptk.org.
Visit the Case Study Challenge website at www.usatoday.com/educate/challenge/index.htm for details and to view last year’s winning entries. While no purchase is necessary to participate, chapters may purchase USA TODAY at a special volume discount, and discounted individual student subscriptions are also available by calling 800.USA.0001 and asking for Key Code 420. Complete information on both subscription options is available on the Case Study Challenge website.
