On August 14, 71 regional officers and eight regional coordinators representing 24 of the Society’s 29 regions converged in Jackson, Mississippi, for Regional Officer Days at Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters. The three-day event brought officers from as far as Alaska and Hawaii to meet Phi Theta Kappa’s 2003-04 International Officers and receive specialized instruction from Phi Theta Kappa’s International Headquarters Staff. “It was an awesome experience and very much appreciated. This event allowed us to share ideas with each other that will help the chapters within our regions,” said Carolinas Regional President Tamela West. The schedule included educational sessions that prepared regional officers to guide chapters in their regions in the implementation of Society programs. Those in attendance were among the first to view the new Chapter Resource DVD including multi-media resources designed to launch the Society’s new “Good as Gold” visibility campaign. Representatives from USA TODAY were also on hand to introduce the USA TODAY Readership Program for Community Colleges. “I came away with a greater understanding of the importance of Phi Theta Kappa and its programs. I am now ready to share what I have learned with our college president, other chapters in our region, and my own chapter officers,” said Minn-Wi-Kota Regional Officer Terra Phillips. Regional officers not only learned from the presenters, but they also learned from each other. The schedule offered a variety of opportunities for officers to network and share ideas. “I had the chance to meet the most wonderful people, from the staff at International Headquarters to all the regional officers and coordinators. Just knowing that I have others I can count on when I need help is the greatest blessing,” said Mary Hooker-Myer, Columbus District Representative for the Ohio Region. The final day of the event included leadership training based on Phi Theta Kappa’s Leadership Development Studies Program. “The one thing that helped me the most was the leadership development. I will be teaching a seminar at the Virginia Leadership Conference next month and the advice that was given was great. It will help me give a more informative session and gave me insight into what leadership is all about,” said Virginia Regional President Margaret Reed. The event concluded with a tour of Canton, Mississippi, home of Phi Theta Kappa’s first headquarters office, led by Executive Director Rod A. Risley. Based on comments from participants, Regional Officer Days at Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters struck gold with the Society’s regional leaders. This inaugural event is destined to become a much-anticipated annual educational opportunity for regional officers.
