Major Enhancements Announced for Guistwhite, Leaders of Promise Scholarships

Phi Theta Kappa’s Guistwhite and Leaders of Promise Scholarship programs have been considerably enhanced, both in numbers of scholarships and in dollar amounts - meaning doubled scholarship opportunities for Phi Theta Kappa members!

A total of 30 Leaders of Promise Scholarships of $1,000 each, and 20 Guistwhite Scholarships of $5,000 each, will be awarded in 2004, according to a recent announcement by the Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors.

“This wonderful enhancement to our scholarship offerings was made possible by proceeds from the Phi Theta Kappa MBNA credit card program,” said Society Executive Director Rod Risley. “Because of the success of this program, Phi Theta Kappa has been able to double the dollar amount of the Leaders of Promise Scholarships and triple the number of available scholarships. Also, we have doubled the number of Guistwhite Scholarships.

“These two programs now offer a combined total of $130,000 in scholarship awards annually to 50 members - exactly double what these programs have provided in the past. This is a major enhancement of our scholarship programs and an outstanding addition to our membership benefits.

” Leaders of Promise Scholarships fund associate degree studies. Selection is based on academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential through involvement in Society programs. Previously, 10 Leaders of Promise Scholarships of $500 each were awarded.

Members with at least a 3.5 gpa and 36 credit hours or less are eligible to apply for Leaders of Promise Scholarships. Leaders of Promise application forms will be available in February 2004. Recipients will be announced in the summer of 2004. For complete eligibility criteria and other information, see www.ptk.org/schol/leadpromise/.

Guistwhite Scholarships fund baccalaureate studies. Selection is based on academic achievement and participation in Phi Theta Kappa. Previously, 10 Guistwhite Scholars were selected to receive $5,000 scholarships, and 10 Finalists received $1,000 scholarships.

Guistwhite Scholarship applications for 2004 will be available in October. Applications may be downloaded from the Society website, and may be requested from Headquarters. All-USA Academic Team nominees may also apply for Guistwhite Scholarships by completing the Guistwhite section of their nomination forms.

Guistwhite Scholarship applications must be received at Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters by December 5. Guistwhite Scholars will be announced at Phi Theta Kappa’s 2004 International Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Complete information is available at www.ptk.org/schol/guistwhite/.

Guistwhite Scholarships are named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his wife, Margaret Guistwhite, of Boca Raton, Florida. While an administrator at Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Guistwhite established the very first transfer scholarship dedicated specifically for Phi Theta Kappa members. Today some 600 senior colleges and universities offer $35 million in transfer scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members.
