Financial Assistance for Membership Fees Makes $ense

Occasionally, chapters encounter students who are eligible for membership but unable to accept the invitation to membership due to financial constraints. To combat this problem, chapters have developed creative solutions to make membership attainable. Some of these programs are based on financial need, while others are awarded to a winner of a competition. Other programs randomly award a membership fee assistance scholarship to a new inductee at large.

New Mexico Regional Coordinator Chuck Bohleke says his chapter at San Juan College offers three scholarship programs to assist new members with membership fees.

“Our chapter’s alumni group provides us with two scholarships per semester which are awarded as prizes for the best essays on the Honors Study Topic.

“To bolster interest and attendance at orientation meetings, the chapter awards two scholarships which cover membership fees. We have potential members fill out information cards and then draw one at each orientation for a free membership,” says Bohleke. “We also have six need-based scholarships per year that are provided by the San Juan College Foundation to help build greater diversity in the chapter. These scholarships have helped us attract many to the chapter that might not think of it otherwise.”

The chapter at Sullivan County Community College in New York is able to assist students with membership fees thanks to the Adopt a Scholar Program established by college president Dr. Mamie Golladay.

“This program is run by the Sullivan County Community College Foundation,” says advisor Lisa Topolovec. “The Foundation looks for donors from the faculty and staff within the college to give amounts of $20 toward the cost of a student’s membership in Phi Theta Kappa. Any prospective inductee can take advantage of this scholarship, which covers half of the $40 fee. So far, any student who has asked for it has not been turned down. This makes membership more affordable for some who otherwise may not be able to join.”

If your chapter is losing potential members as a result of an inability to afford membership fees, investigate local resources to find out if your chapter can offer a membership fee assistance scholarship. You may be surprised at others’ willingness to get involved in such a worthy cause!
