Nota Bene

Do You Have the Write Stuff?

December 3, 2004 Deadline Set for Nota Bene Anthology Entries

Nota Bene, Latin for "note well," is Phi Theta Kappa's honors anthology. Published annually since 1994, Nota Bene recognizes outstanding writing of Phi Theta Kappa members and demonstrates to the literary public the academic excellence and commitment to scholarship found at two-year colleges.

Current members are encouraged to participate in the 2005 Nota Bene competition. A panel of writers and educators will review submissions, and the Nota Bene Jury will choose 100 selections for final review. No more than 30 selections are chosen annually for publication.

The author of the manuscript judged most outstanding will receive the Citation Scholarship, a stipend of $1,000. Authors of four manuscripts will be named recipients of Reynolds Scholarship Awards, stipends of $500 each. These awards honor the memory of the late Donald W. Reynolds, founder of the Donrey Media Group, and are endowed by the Pine Bluff, Arkansas foundation established in his name.

2004 Reynolds Scholarship Winner Michael Caves said he entered the Nota Bene competition to gain more exposure for his writing. "I use poetry to help others see things the way I do," Caves said. "I think good poetry is a balance between the personal and the objective. A good poem should be personal enough to inspire emotion and intrigue, but objective enough so that it is approachable and at least one other person can still identify with it."

In addition to poetry, Phi Theta Kappa members had their short stories, essays and research papers published in the 2004 issue of Nota Bene. See a complete list of entries published in this year's issue at www.ptk.org/publications/notabene/author_2004.htm.

The deadline for the 2005 Nota Bene is December 3, 2004.

Entries should be mailed to:

Phi Theta Kappa
Center for Excellence
Attn: Nota Bene
1625 Eastover Drive
Jackson, MS 39211

Due to the large volume of submissions, manuscripts cannot be returned, nor can members be notified when manuscripts arrive at Society Headquarters. If proof of delivery is required, please send manuscript(s) Return Receipt Requested.
