Honors Satellite Seminars: Up Close and Personal

Are you looking for ways to implement the Honors Study Topic in your chapter and in your region?

The 2004 Honors Satellite Seminar Series is just what you need!

The Satellite Seminar Series will feature five exciting, interactive discussions on hot topics related to the 2004-06 Phi Theta Kappa Honors Study Topic, Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.

The Series is an excellent foundation for a comprehensive Scholarship program.
  • Because the discussions of popular culture will be applicable and relative to studies in history, American studies, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, the arts, advertising, marketing, and many more, your chapter can use the Series to enhance the scholarly efforts of your members.
  • The Series will enable your chapter to share knowledge with your campus by inviting other campus groups, such as social clubs, academic societies, faculty, and administrators, to participate in the discussions.
  • The Series will enable you to reach out to the community by inviting local high school honor students, parents, and community members to hear the lectures and contribute to scholarly discourse.
  • Finally, the Series will focus on the Honors Study Topic. Your chapter is encouraged to further research and explore the issues presented in the Series, or to explore new and exciting issues that are important to your members.

Don't let a limited budget keep you from participating!

If your Phi Theta Kappa chapter has a limited budget and cannot afford the Satellite Seminar Series, don't give up. Many colleges would be thrilled by the opportunity to host a five-part speaker series, featuring nationally known experts, for only $425 - less than the cost of bringing just one of these speakers to campus individually! So, seek money from your college. Here are some innovative ideas:

  • Request a meeting with the Dean of Instruction or Dean of Academic Affairs on your campus, and explain the academic benefits of hosting the Satellite Seminar Series on your campus.
  • Present information about the Series to the Director of your college Honors Program.
  • Consult with faculty in the history, American studies, social science, sociology, anthropology, and arts departments.
  • Share information about this educational opportunity with your college library. The library may wish to purchase tapes to add to their general collection.
  • Contact the Student Government Association. Funds may be available for campus-wide events, concerts, or speakers.
  • Speak with the Dean of Admissions or other admissions officer, and propose a "High School Honor Society Day" on campus. Invite area high school honor students to visit your campus, attend a reception in their honor, and then participate in the Honors Satellite Seminar. Show them that your college has the academic edge they are looking for!
