Advisor Transitions: Passing the Baton
If you are an advisor who is planning to leave Phi Theta Kappa for any reason from retirement to accepting a new position, you can help smooth the transition for the new advisor. Several things that will help your successor include:
- Report the new advisor to Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters so they receive a Chapter Resource Manual and other important information.
- Organize the chapter materials and discard any that are outdated. Keep the current Five Star Chapter Development Program Guide, Program Guides for the Honors Study Topic and International Service Program, Chapter Bylaws and meeting minutes, and information on recent and upcoming chapter activities.
- Make a floppy disk or CD for the new advisor with often-used files.
- Put induction supplies in a prominently marked place.
- If possible, arrange a meeting where you can show the new advisor how to navigate the Phi Theta Kappa website, use eMembers, and set goals for chapter programming within the four Society Hallmarks.
- Be available to answer questions from your successor for a period of time following the transition.
