College Project Success:
High Schools Have What It Takes
Are you looking for a new College Project that will provide a needed service to your college? The College Project is a requirement in Level Three of the Five Star Chapter Development Program. Many chapters have found College Project success by looking no further than their local high schools.
High school students are becoming increasingly aware of the many reasons to attend a two-year college as the first step towards graduating from a four-year college. But do high school students know the steps to enrolling in a community college? Do they know how to choose the coursework that will transfer to a four-year institution? Your chapter can serve your college and community by meeting with area high school students and providing information about the opportunities offered at your school.
Providing this service to the college is a great way to showcase the college's success and get high school students interested in seeking membership in Phi Theta Kappa once they become eligible. Chapters may also utilize National Honor Society (NHS) resources to increase awareness of Phi Theta Kappa membership benefits among high school honor students.
Phi Theta Kappa works with NHS on a variety of programs and initiatives in an effort to make sure high school students and counselors are aware of the community college as a viable educational choice. In addition to other resources, NHS has State Directors who may be beneficial in helping chapters and regions collaborate with local NHS chapters. Contact information for State Directors may be found at the NHS website at www.nhs.us.
The purpose of the College Project is to establish a positive working relationship with the college administration by providing a needed service to the college. The first step is to schedule a meeting with your college president, campus CEO, or another administrator to determine your project. Advisors and chapter officers should be prepared to make suggestions to your college administration; consider adding working with area high schools to the top of your list.
When your chapter has completed the project, be sure to submit the online College Project Form at www.ptk.org/FiveStar/project_signin.go. Information about the Five Star Chapter Development Program and additional College Project ideas can be found at www.ptk.org/fivestar/.
Let this College Project help your chapter make a good impression with your college president, by increasing the awareness of high school students about the many opportunities awaiting them at your college.
