Inducting Part-Time Students Gives Your Chapter Full-Time Members

Currently 92 percent of Phi Theta Kappa chapters allow part-time students to be inducted into membership. The Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Bainbridge College in Georgia has found that inducting part-time students enhances their chapter. "It is very important to recognize the part-time students as well as the full-time students," said Chapter President Michelle Matthews. "We do not want anyone's accomplishments to go unnoticed."

However, chapters may need to go a step further than simply allowing part-time members to be inducted. Scheduling chapter meetings, orientations and activities at inconvenient and unvarying times could also be a turn-off to potential members who might feel they couldn't participate if they did accept the membership invitation.

"Our chapter strives to include everyone in all the activities. We know that not everyone can participate but we try to schedule events and activities so that more of our members can participate," said Bainbridge advisor Jessica Long. "It is very important to include these students because since they are part-time they don't get to enjoy all the activities that full-time students enjoy during the day or evenings."
