Explore Power in the "Land of Lincoln"

Are you wondering where the "Land of Lincoln" is? Look no further! Phi Theta Kappa's 2007 International Honors Institute will be held in the "Land of Lincoln" - otherwise known as - ILLINOIS.

Why is Illinois called the "Land of Lincoln"? Although Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and lived in Indiana before moving to Illinois, it was Illinois where he began his political career with an unsuccessful run for the Illinois General Assembly in 1832. Lincoln eventually was elected to four terms in the Illinois General Assembly and served from 1834-1841. Illinois was also where Lincoln lived when he became the sixteenth President of the United States in 1861.

Want to find out more about the famous Prairie State? Plan now to attend the 2007 International Honors Institute at Wheaton College near Chicago in Wheaton, Illinois, June 18-23.

Known as the ultimate Phi Theta Kappa honors programming experience, the Honors Institute is a six-day conference that brings together members, advisors and alumni to closely examine Phi Theta Kappa's 2006-08 Honors Study Topic, Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power. The Institute is known for its mix of inspiring lectures, in-depth small group discussions led by specially trained Faculty Scholars, experiential exercises, and field trips.

Perhaps the most highly acclaimed aspect of the Honors Institute is the seminar group. Institute participants are divided into groups of 18-20 people. These seminar groups, led by advisors known as Faculty Scholars, meet after each of the speaker presentations throughout the week. In the seminar groups, Institute participants are able to express their opinions in a comfortable setting, discuss the theories explored during the general sessions and share ideas for chapter projects and research. For many participants, the seminar group is where the real learning takes place.

Also, the Honors Institute provides a special educational opportunity for chapter and regional officers. Time is set aside during the Institute for these groups to explore the many programs and initiatives Phi Theta Kappa has to offer. Officers will return to their chapters and regions with meaningful ideas for implementing the Honors Study Topic and other Society programs.

Finally, another benefit of the Honors Institute this year is the proximity of Wheaton College to the "Windy City." The college is a short train ride away from the heart of Chicago. Take advantage of the many attractions the city has to offer. Chicago's most popular sites and attractions include the Sears Tower, Hancock Observatory, Navy Pier, shopping along the Magnificent Mile, Hershey Factory Works, Adler Planetarium, Art Institute, Cultural Center, History Museum, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Soldier Field and much more. Institute attendees will have a full day to explore Chicago, visit local attractions, or just rest, relax and hang out with friends.
