Book Drives for Better Lives
Phi Theta Kappa announced a new partnership with Better World Books at the recent International Convention in Seattle, Washington. Better World Books is a social enterprise dedicated to supporting non-profit literacy organizations through the collections of out-of-date or slightly used textbooks.
Better World Books works with three non-profit literacy partners to ensure that your chapter can make a global impact. Your chapter chooses which literacy organization benefits from your book drive.
Textbook drives also ensure a cleaner environment. Recycling used textbooks is an ideal way to promote Phi Theta Kappa's new International Service Program, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities, on your campus. To date, more than 2.6 million pounds of books have been kept out of landfills through Better World Books' book drives.
Chapters coordinating book drives are not only supporting a great cause, but also implementing an easy fundraising opportunity, since Better World Books offers $.50 for each qualifying book collected!
Simplicity is key when conducting a book drive; in fact, success is as easy as 1-2-3!
1. Get Permission: It is important to go through the proper channels when conducting any fundraiser, especially since fundraisers are good sources of public relations for your chapter. Check with your college administration and campus bookstore; once you get the green light, then let the planning begin.
2. Make Contact: Call the Better World Books Regional Director for your area. A complete list of names and email addresses may be found at www.betterworldbooks.com. Regional Directors will walk you through every phase of planning your book drive, and provide all materials necessary, including:
- Donation boxes
- Posters
- Prepaid UPS shipping labels
- Mentorship
3. Follow Through: Once the materials arrive, it is then time to put your plans in motion. Recruit volunteers, set up donation boxes, and place posters on your campus - then watch the donation bins fill! Each eligible book earns $.50 for your chapter.
