More Ways to Improve Our Communities
- Invite a local Keep America Beautiful affiliate to speak at a chapter
meeting or event.
- Help create a school environmental improvement committee that
includes both students and faculty.
- Run articles in the campus newspaper highlighting environmental
facts and the importance of taking individual responsibility to
improve our environment.
- Assist with building a new playground in a local park.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper asking others to
respect public lands.
- Learn where your trash goes after it is collected, and how you can
reduce waste.
- Start a "Kick Butts" campaign to deter cigarette littering.
- Volunteer to help your employer start a recycling program at work.
- Plant trees, shrubs, wildflowers or grass to improve wildlife habitat.
- Reuse or donate unwanted items.
- Buy products that have been recycled.
- Compost yard and food waste.
- Help children write a short skit about an environmental topic and
give it to a teacher.
- Educate your community leaders about the benefits of clean, safe
neighborhoods.
- Help sponsor a trash fishing contest in a waterway to increase
awareness about dumping and littering.
- Work with city or county government officials to sponsor a
Household Hazardous Waste Collection for items such as used
batteries, motor oil and paint.
- Keep storm drains clear of debris.
- Carry a litter bag in your car.
- Adopt and beautify a local spot or roadside.
- Organize a clean-up of a local river, lake or stream.
- Encourage companies to develop packaging that is reusable,
recyclable or otherwise easily disposable.
- Host a food festival featuring natural and organic foods, and
information about the environmental and health impacts of our
food choices.
- Take kids camping or on a nature hike to explore the great
outdoors.
- Celebrate National Arbor Day by planting a tree. Each state
observes Arbor Day on different dates. Find your state's

- Recognize "Environmental Heroes"
in your community with a
banquet or reception.
