More Ways to Improve Our Communities

  1. Invite a local Keep America Beautiful affiliate to speak at a chapter meeting or event.
  2. Help create a school environmental improvement committee that includes both students and faculty.
  3. Run articles in the campus newspaper highlighting environmental facts and the importance of taking individual responsibility to improve our environment.
  4. Assist with building a new playground in a local park.
  5. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper asking others to respect public lands.
  6. Learn where your trash goes after it is collected, and how you can reduce waste.
  7. Start a "Kick Butts" campaign to deter cigarette littering.
  8. Volunteer to help your employer start a recycling program at work.
  9. Plant trees, shrubs, wildflowers or grass to improve wildlife habitat.
  10. Reuse or donate unwanted items.
  11. Buy products that have been recycled.
  12. Compost yard and food waste.
  13. Help children write a short skit about an environmental topic and give it to a teacher.
  14. Educate your community leaders about the benefits of clean, safe neighborhoods.
  15. Help sponsor a trash fishing contest in a waterway to increase awareness about dumping and littering.
  16. Work with city or county government officials to sponsor a Household Hazardous Waste Collection for items such as used batteries, motor oil and paint.
  17. Keep storm drains clear of debris.
  18. Carry a litter bag in your car.
  19. Adopt and beautify a local spot or roadside.
  20. Organize a clean-up of a local river, lake or stream.
  21. Encourage companies to develop packaging that is reusable, recyclable or otherwise easily disposable.
  22. Host a food festival featuring natural and organic foods, and information about the environmental and health impacts of our food choices.
  23. Take kids camping or on a nature hike to explore the great outdoors.
  24. Celebrate National Arbor Day by planting a tree. Each state observes Arbor Day on different dates. Find your state's information at www.arborday.org/arborday/arbordaydates.cfm.
  25. Recognize "Environmental Heroes" in your community with a banquet or reception. Be sure to publicize your event to the media.
