Hallmark Hysteria:
How to Organize Your Efforts to Ensure an On-Time Entry
By Glen Hansford

The Hallmark Awards Program is designed to honor and encourage excellence in the Society’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. The competitive awards program includes categories for everyone - chapters, members, chapter presidents, chapter and regional officers, advisors and college presidents.

The Hallmark Awards Program Guide, containing entry cover sheets, was mailed to all advisors and chapter presidents with the Convention Planning Guide. If your chapter has not received a copy, please contact Director of Chapter Programs Tracee Walker at 601.957.2241, ext. 524. Cover sheets are also available on the Society’s website at www.ptk.org.

Participating in the Hallmark Awards Program not only provides your chapter with opportunities to be recognized, it also gives the chapter a great team-building experience. Everyone can contribute something.

Below is a Sample Timeline to Help Plan Your Participation.

ASAP!

Delegate and Designate!

  • Committees should be assigned and your workload divided.

  • Evaluate members’ talents and interests to determine who would be best for each task. Example: A very technical computer programming major may not enjoy writing a 1,250 word essay, but an English composition major may jump at the chance.

December 10
and We're Off!

  • Actually start writing the essays and structuring the chronological list.

January 14
Proofread, Proofread, Proofread

  • Be completely finished with all essays and begin the proofreading process.

  • Include members, alumni, and English or journalism professors in your proofing efforts.

  • Notify those individuals who are writing letters of recommendation that you will need the letters in two weeks.

  • Gather supplementary materials that may enhance your entry, such as a newspaper clipping or a page of photos.

January 31
Some Assembly Required.

  • Make TWO copies of all entries.

  • Ensure that the advisor has signed each cover sheet.

  • Check and double check to make sure that you have included everything.

February 11
Send It!

  • Beat the rush and mail your Hallmark Awards entries in one package!

February 22:
Got 'Em!

  • Awards must be RECEIVED at Headquarters by 5:00 p.m. CST.

  • Late entries will not be judged.

  • Faxed or emailed entries will not be accepted.

  • Your chapter will receive written confirmation through email or mail verifying that Headquarters has received your entries.

April 4-6
and the Winner Is...

  • Winners will be announced during the General Sessions and the Hallmark Awards Gala at the International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee! We hope to see you on stage!
