Student Government Leaders Learn About Leadership, Phi Theta Kappa-Style
By Monika Byrd

At the annual conference of the Community College Student Council Association of Mississippi held earlier this fall, Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters staff members and certified leadership development instructors Monika Byrd and Tracy Thomas-Wade conducted workshops for the student leaders in attendance from around the state. The conference focused on leadership development, and thus provided a perfect opportunity for student leaders to learn more about what Phi Theta Kappa offers its members beyond academic recognition. Monika Byrd is Phi Theta Kappa’s Director of Leadership Development Programs, and Tracy Thomas-Wade is the Chapter Officer Coordinator. The workshops they led were interactive sessions designed to build an awareness of leadership styles and philosophies, ethical leadership, and teamwork so that student leaders could return to their campuses with new insights about leadership, leadership issues, and team-building skills to enhance their roles and further their initiatives in their communities.

The material from Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies is well-suited for the diverse student leaders of community colleges. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, drawing primarily from the humanities. Regardless of their course of study, student leaders can relate to the lessons and insights about leadership in film, historical, and literary portrayals of leaders in action.

Approximately 1,200 faculty members, many of whom are Phi Theta Kappa advisors, are certified instructors of the Society’s leadership course at more than 400 two-year colleges. Many chapters are already involved in programs and workshops that bring high school students to their campuses for leadership training based on the course material.
