More than 3,800 Phi Theta Kappa members and advisors are expected to converge on the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee, April 4-6, 2002, for the Society’s 84th International Convention! “We’ve Got the Beat,” the International Convention theme, not only salutes host city Nashville, country music capital of the world, but also sets the stage for the introduction of the Honors Study Topic and International Service Program for 2002-04, both utilizing health as their central focus. Keeping the beat going will be the outstanding slate of speakers, guaranteed to deliver messages that will motivate, challenge and inform Convention attendees. Opening ceremonies speaker Bonnie St. John knows all about overcoming adversity and delivering high performance under stress. An amputee for most of her life, she achieved the near-impossible feat of becoming an Olympic gold-medal skier, is a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar, and a former White House staff member. Left will meet right in the Convention’s Fourth General Session, when liberal, outspoken Democrat James Carville goes head-to-head with archconservative Republican Newt Gingrich. Carville has managed more political campaigns than anyone in U.S. history, including President Clinton’s. Gingrich served in Congress for 20 years and is widely recognized as the chief architect of the Republican Contract with America. The Fifth General Session speaker needs no introduction to Phi Theta Kappa. Warren Jackson, 2001-02 International President, has traveled from coast to coast, representing Phi Theta Kappa at both Society regional meetings and other conferences in the higher education arena. As one of only 15 members of the National Youth Partnership Team for America’s Promise — The Alliance for Youth, Jackson met President George Bush when he represented Phi Theta Kappa at the White House.
