The Colorado Regional Officers are looking for a few good Phi Theta Kappans who really know their state for the first year-long “Colorado Regional Trivia Rally.” The rally pertains to the 2001-02 Honors Study Topic, “Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive for Community.” According to Regional Vice President Tanya Lewark of Red Rocks Community College, questions are hidden throughout the region’s website (www.co-ptk.org) and given out at events by a regional board member. Answers to questions should be emailed to Tanya. Points will be awarded to the first chapter that submits the correct answer using a point value system that ranges from 500 to 1000. The more difficult questions will hold the highest point value. After the grand tally, the winner will receive a free registration package to the 2002 International Convention in Nashville, Tennessee!
The Oklahoma/Arkansas Region was honored with the presence of several local dignitaries during their recent Honors/Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City. Honorable Kelly Haney, the first Native American State Senator, discussed leadership roles, and area attorneys and judges participated in a panel discussion regarding young people within the judicial system. Also present were community representatives who were instrumental in the design and construction of the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial. To highlight the America’s Promise International Service Program, conference attendees heard a presentation by the director of a school for homeless children in Oklahoma City. Afterwards, the members provided games and educational activities to the school children in a carnival-like event called “Midway at the Hotel.”
The Pacific Region’s Leadership Conference, held just two weeks after the terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, incorporated a panel discussion about the events of September 11 from a leadership perspective. Panelists were selected from the Leeward Community College faculty in Pearl City, Hawaii, based on their religious background and represented Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and atheism. Members of the region also made 100 origami swans (an ancient Japanese tradition of making paper shapes of birds and flowers to inspire good luck and fortune) to be sent to the New York Region.
Phi Theta Kappa’s Nevada/California Region has collected more than $30,000 for the American Red Cross, in a special fund drive to benefit victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Twenty community colleges in the region participated in the fundraiser, which was organized by Grossmont College Chapter President Marisol Arroyo-Roman and 2001-02 Nevada/California Regional President Adam Dince. The Grossmont Student Government in El Cajon, California, also participated in the drive on their campus, and agreed to match contributions up to $10,000. The successful fundraising campaign not only “brought the region closer together, but also helped alleviate many students’ feelings of helplessness by providing an avenue for service,” said Dince.
