Chapters Find Great Ways to Share the Honors Study
Topic
By Tracy Thomas-Wade
Chapters all over
the Society are finding innovative ways to implement this year’s Honors
Study Topic, “Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive for
Community.” Take a look at what these chapters have planned...
Cookbook Project
The Blinn
College chapter in Brenham, Texas, is planning to publish a cookbook
with recipes based on diverse customs and traditions. Each recipe’s page
will include a section explaining the significance of the recipe as it
relates to a family custom or tradition. All proceeds made from the cookbook
sales will be donated to area youth projects to benefit America’s Promise.
For more information on this project, contact Deborah
Cook.
Art Contest
Building
awareness is the chapter goal at North Central Missouri College.
This fall, four Trenton, Missouri, elementary schools are participating
in an art contest entitled “My Community.” Children are expected to submit
their own original works of art. Art subject matter includes ideas on
cultures and traditions within the Trenton community and beyond. The chapter
is awarding first, second and third place prizes. For more information
on this project, contact Gail
Eckert-Reeves.
International Festival
Day
Along with
their Student Government Association, the chapter at Hillsborough Community
College in Tampa, Florida, had a festival to highlight the cultures
of their college’s diverse student population. Booths were set up to display
art, music, food, furniture, currency, clothing, books, toys, and photos
from 30 representative countries. Professional dancers from many different
cultures performed throughout the afternoon. To complete the festive day,
the chapter awarded a prize for the best booth. For more information on
this project, contact Amfi Tzourellas.
Racial Reconciliation
Project
The chapter
at Tulsa Community College in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been commissioned
by their college and city to be facilitators for racial relations focus
groups. Chapter members attended comprehensive facilitator training sessions
coordinated by representatives from the Tulsa Mayor’s Office. A major
goal of the project is to bring diverse constituencies together for consensus-based,
focused conversations about racial reconciliation. Members will work to
enhance public awareness of the need to work toward racial reconciliation
and stimulate other efforts and initiatives that work toward systemic
change in the area of race relations. For more information on this project,
contact Toni Hammond.
