Transferring with a Technical Twist

Does the idea of transferring to a four-year college send you into a tizzy? Typewriters, white-out correction fluid, photocopies, and repeating the same information over and over can frazzle even nerves of steel. When transferring, save some time and hassle by taking the technical route.

Toss that typewriter and make your mouse your main squeeze. Today there are more and more on-line services that can make the transfer process faster and easier. Check out some of the following sites and get ready to click your way to a new college.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Programs

Begin your transfer adventure at Phi Theta Kappa's web site, where you'll find more than 500 institutions offering more than $30 million in scholarships exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members. You can search for schools by state or country. The site also provides links to most of the schools'  web sites, so you can learn more about the institutions offering the scholarships.

College web sites are everywhere and fast improving to offer prospective students more information and services. Visit a four-year college web site, and you are likely to find a list of degrees offered, course descriptions, virtual tours of the campus and even on-line applications.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid

The United States Department of Education is also jumping on the technology bandwagon by offering the completion of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on line. Completing the form on line can be up to 14 days faster than the traditional pen and paper method. Submitting your information using FAFSA on the web eliminates delays that can occur from mailing. Also, FAFSA on the web edits your application before you transmit, ensuring that the data you transmit to the U.S. Department of Education is ready to be processed. When time is money, this is certainly the way to go.

If you are planning to apply to multiple colleges, an on-line application service may be beneficial. With many of these services, you only enter your information once. The services then pull your information into applications from colleges of your choice. Most of the services are free to applicants. The companies make their money from the schools that participate in the program.
