“Your Turn To Speak”:
Suggestions for Workshops/Speaker Topics
at Regional Conventions

Many regional officers are involved in planning the workshops and keynote addresses at their regional conventions. Some even find themselves in the role of workshop facilitator and/or keynote speaker.

To ensure your convention is time well spent for your attendees, here are some suggestions to keep in mind when planning the program content.

The best place to start is by answering the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of the regional convention?
  • What types of information are most important for members to leave with?
  • What’s new in Phi Theta Kappa? What is happening in the region?
  • What topics are most helpful for community college students?

A great source for ideas is at the very foundation of Phi Theta Kappa — the four Hallmarks, Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship. Ideally, your regional convention will incorporate all four.

Suggested topics for each Hallmark include the following:

Scholarship

  • Honors Study Topic or International Honors Institute
  • Regional Honors Study Topic Project
  • Nota Bene Literary Anthology (publishes selected members’ writings)
  • Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Programs (Leaders of Promise Scholarship, All-USA Academic Team, All-State Academic Team, Guistwhite Scholar Program, Senior Institution Transfer Scholarships, etc.)

Leadership

  • Leadership Skills (Goal Setting, Team Building, Delegating, Initiating Change, etc.)
  • Leadership Styles
  • Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies Course
  • Campaigning for Regional/International Office

Service

  • America’s Promise, Phi Theta Kappa’s 2000-02 International Service Program
  • Your Regional Service Project

Fellowship

  • International, Regional and Chapter Communications
  • Opportunities to Attend International Convention and International Honors Institute
  • Regional Fellowship Events

Other workshop topics:

  • Hallmark Awards Program
  • Five Star Chapter Development Program
  • Chapter Fundraising
  • Transferring to a Senior Institution Job Interview Skills
