She wasn't expecting it, but it was a nice surprise. Joan Keller, Senior Coordinator for the Carolinas Region, was recently honored with a surprise dinner celebrating her service to Phi Theta Kappa as the region's coordinator since 1992. Keller, who announced her retirement in 2001, became a member of Phi Theta Kappa as a student at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina. She returned to the two-year college as an accounting teacher and was appointed as the chapter's advisor in 1988. According to Edna Boroski, chapter advisor at Trident Technical College, nearly 40 Phi Theta Kappans, family and friends from the region paid homage to Keller at the dinner held last December in North Charleston. "When it comes to Phi Theta Kappa, Joan is a 'lifer' and has been a mentor to many, many students both past and present," said Boroski. "Those relationships continue to flourish, and she continues to touch lives." Trident's chapter president Steve Jones emceed the tribute, which included presentations from local and regional members. Email messages from her colleagues outside of the Carolinas Region were also read aloud. Rod Risley, Executive Director of Phi Theta Kappa, wrote, "We have marveled at the success of your chapter and the chapters in the Carolinas Region. You demonstrated time and time again effective leadership when working with advisors, members and alumni. Today, the Carolinas Region is well positioned to reach new levels of achievement by virtue of the firm foundation you worked to establish." Keller, a Certified Public Accountant, remains committed to her profession. She also plans to continue her work in literacy, serve as an adjunct instructor this school term and stay active with Trident's alumni chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Above all else, she plans to enjoy quality time with her new granddaughter, Rachel Keller. The Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters Staff congratulates Joan on her retirement and sincerely thanks her for her many years of service.
