Preparing for Your Next Induction
What to Do and When to Do It
By Kimberly Norman

Planning ahead is the key to a successful induction. Below is a sample timeline:

8 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • In order to find out which students have met the required Grade Point Average and credit hours, a list of students should be obtained from your college registrar.

7 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • Now that the eligible students have been identified, an invitation letter should be sent. The letter should (A) congratulate students on their excellent academic record; (B) notify them of their eligibility to become a Phi Theta Kappa member; (C) invite them to an orientation to learn more about Society benefits; (D) contain a contact person’s name, telephone number and email address to answer any questions. The letter is most effective when signed by the college president.

  • Be sure to include the Member Benefits Brochure with each letter. This brochure, available free of charge from Headquarters, explains in detail the many benefits and honors associated with membership in Phi Theta Kappa. The brochure may also be used as a poster to place around campus to heighten awareness.

6 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • To add a personal touch to membership recruitment, try giving your potential members a call. Officers and members can personalize the advantages of membership, answer any questions and remind the students of the upcoming orientation.

5 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • Conduct a New Member Orientation. During the orientation remember to explain the benefits of membership, highlight the opportunities for scholarships, distribute Membership Applications, and explain that international and regional membership fees are paid only once. Remind them of the deadline for returning the applications and fees, and conclude with the date, time and location of the induction ceremony.

4 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • The advisor should collect all membership applications and fees from each student planning to become a member.

3 weeks
Prior to the Induction

  • To ensure new members receive their membership benefits as soon as possible, the advisor should report new members to Headquarters via eMembers or by mailing the Official Report of New Members to Phi Theta Kappa, P.O. Box 13729, Jackson, MS 39236-3729.

  • Finalize plans for the induction ceremony.
