Induction Ideas
By Tracy Thomas-Wade
Try a Joint Induction Ceremony
The chapters
at Caņada College in Redwood City, California, and Skyline College
in San Bruno, California, decided to pool their resources in an effort
to improve upon one of the Society's oldest traditions. The chapters accomplished
this by hosting the region's first combined induction ceremony. Cooperation
and collaboration were keys to success during the ceremony with both chapters
equally participating in the program. Not only did the ceremony introduce
new members to the Society, but it also served as a celebration of community
through academic ties.
Spotlight the Honors
Study Topic
For a special twist, the chapter at Black Hawk College in Moline,
Illinois, added a cultural dance performance to their induction ceremony.
Attendees enjoyed a traditional formal ceremony, which included piano
music, blue and gold balloons, corsages, boutonnieres, and candles galore.
To conclude the ceremony,
a professional dance group entertained the crowd. The dance was in celebration
of the current Honors Study Topic. The event ended with a bountiful reception
for all in attendance.
Reward a Special
Teacher
During their induction ceremony, the chapter at Inver Hills Community
College in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, presented an award to a
very special professor. The chapter wanted to recognize both superior
performance and dedication. The winning professor was chosen through a
student election and named "Teacher of the Year." By including this recognition
program in their ceremony, the chapter was able to demonstrate their appreciation
of both students and faculty's commitment to academic excellence.
Get Alumni Involved
Approximately 25 alumni members of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Broome
Community College in Binghamton, New York, attended the chapter's
fall induction last November. The college's Alumni Affairs Office helped
coordinate the event, sorting through years of files, updating addresses,
and then inviting former members to return to the campus for the induction
and a special reception afterwards. Photos and memorabilia were on display
showing some of the chapter's past activities.
